Simple Gifts: A Workshop and Concert

Friday, March 25, 2011
Sulzberger Parlor, 3rd Floor Barnard Hall

MandolinSimple Gifts is three women performing on 12 different instruments. We play a wide range of ethnic music, including klezmer, Romanian, Bulgarian, Irish, Scottish, French, Greek, Rom (Gypsy), and Appalachian. Among the three of us, we play two violins, concertina, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, guitar, banjo, and piano, plus some more unusual instruments, like the bowed psaltery, banjolin, and doumbek.

Our most recent recording, Crossing Borders: Music of Many Lands, won a national award from the Indie Acoustic Project. We find that we are frequently complimented on our stage presence and our manner with the audience. We structure our programs so that each piece introduces either a new instrument or a new style, and we’re very interactive with the audience in explaining the styles and instruments we play, sometimes inviting audience members on stage to participate. In addition to our normal performances, we offer a variety workshops and lectures.
